President Muhammadu Buhari has made fighting corruption as a key focus of his government since his swearing-in on May 29 last year.
Lai Mohammed, the minister of information, has said in January this year that endemic corruption costs Nigeria billions of dollars per year, adding that the country lost of 1.34 trillion naira ($6.8 billion) in public funds between 2006 and 2013 at the hands of just 55 individuals, including government ministers and bankers.
British Prime Minister David Cameron was caught saying that Nigeria is ‘fantastically corrupt’ and President Buhari did not argue with him during the anti-corruption summit in London.
During his first year in power the Nigerian leader has arrested many officials of the previous government of Goodluck Jonathan.
Below are seven key Jonathan’s men who were arrested over the charges of corruption.
1. Sambo Dasuki
A former national security adviser, Sambo Dasuki, was arrested on December 1, 2015, for allegedly stealing $2 billion (£1.3 billion). He is accused of diverting money meant for buying weapons for the fight against the deadly Boko Haram sect.
2. Olisa Metuh
The arrest of the spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Olisa Metuh linked to Dasuki case. Later, Metuh was granted bail and released.
3. Femi Fani-Kayode
Fani-Kayode, a former aviation minister, was last week invited by the EFCC to answer questions of corrupt dealings in relation to the Jonathan campaign. Meanwhile, FFK had honored the said invitation by the EFCC on Monday, May 9, and that was the last Nigerians saw or heard from him. Kayode served as a director in the former president campaign organization and is accused of corruptly benefiting from the campaign funds.
4. Ibrahim Shekarau
A former Kano state governor was arrested over alleged helping to distribute N950 million in the #Dasukigate scandal.
5. Waripamowei Dudafa
A top aide to the former president Jonathan Waripamowei Dudafa was arrested by the country’s anti-corruption agency in April. He served as a special assistant on domestic matters to GEJ.
6. Hassan Tukur
The EFCC has arrested Hassan Tukur, a former principal private secretary to Jonathan, on Monday, May 16. One of the most powerful men in Jonathan’s government was picked up by operatives of the agency in his Abuja residence.
7. Ramalan Yero
Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, a former Kaduna state governor, has been arrested by the EFCC over allegations that he collected N700 million from a slush fund former Nigeria’s oil minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, on Monday, May 16.
Ibrahim Magu, the chairman of the EFCC, has recently disclosed that the agency was indeed probing and collating evidence against the former president Jonathan and other accomplices in the arms purchase scandal.
So, Jonathan may join his allies in custody?! Time will tell.
